Creative Nonfiction

The last outside event that I went to was creative nonfiction readings by different students in the Patterson building. The one that stood out the most to me was this guy who read about his experience of living in a small town that was controlled by a strip club. The way he told the story was really funny and he grabbed my attention from the very beginning. He talked about how everyone in the town would end up at the strip club every night and how it was run by a shady old man. I felt with every detail that he listed i was able to visualize the setting and how all the characters were connecting with each other. I have always lived in big cities and the time that I did stay in a smaller city it was probably still bigger than his hometown. All in all his story stood out to me the most because it had a feeling of being fiction, even though it was what he experienced in his life growing up.

Otherlands Cafe

I chose to go to the Otherland's Cafe for one of my outside events. They were having graduate students read some of their works. There were two people that were reading that night, Candace Baxter and Michael Adams. I'm not really sure what to say about Candace Baxter and her story, I would like to be nice about it but that seems very unlikely. She completely lost the entire audience while she was reading, because her story kept shifting from one spot to the next. The story just did not make any sense and I realize that I am not a writer or anything. I just feel that if I were to tell a story, I would make sure that the audience could keep up. The next person to read was Michael Adams and his assortment of poems. Honestly, anything would have sounded good after hearing Baxter talk for thirty minutes. I thought it was good that he was able to talk about his hardships like breaking up with friend and wanting to get her back. Adams was able to incorporate many different elements into each one of his poems, which made everyone of them exciting to listen to.

Leadership

Earlier in the semester my coach pulled me aside and said that he wanted me to attend this leadership workshop. Apparently each coach was supposed to choose a few players from each team who they felt had good leadership qualities. However, I was not supposed to talk about this amongst the team unless it was with those who were also attending the event. My teammates and I went to the Fogelman building where we were treated to a very fancy dinner and dessert before listening to the speaker talk. She started off by telling a story about Josh Pastner who is currently the head coach for our basketball team. When he was a freshman on his basketball team in Arizona, he decided that the system was not correct and it needed to be changed if they wanted to win a national title. The problem is that no one wanted to listen to a rookie who was still wet behind his ears. Pastner kept fighting this opposition and finally reached his peers and sure enough they won a national title that year. I thought the story was really good, and showed that it does not matter if you are a transfer or a new student you can find a way to reach out to your team. Now i think the speaker did a good job, and those who really paid attention will benefit from it. However, despite have great slides and a great story, there are just some individuals who will not go out of their way for others and its sad. I wanted to be different so I came back from this workshop wanting to incorporate new techniques of trying to bring my team closer and hold everyone more accountable including myself. I know I am not on the same level as Josh Pastner but anything is worth a try.

Student Athlete Assembly

For one of my outside events I was somewhat forced to attend a seminar from a speaker named Felicia Hall. The reason that I say that I was forced to attend is because the athletic department sent an e-mail out to all the coaches stating that it was mandatory for players. Normally, I would not be opposed to hearing a success story from a person who knows what it is like to juggle being an athlete and a student. However, I was not a big fan of Ms. Hall's story, maybe it was because I did a million errands that day and the last thing I would have like to do was sit in an auditorium for two hours. I had to be fair though and I listened to the points that she was trying to make. Hall made comments that you have to fight in what you believe in and with superior determination. Also, that you have to be prepared for life once you are off the field or court. I thought she made valid points, but did not think it was an accurate approach for all of her audience. Maybe I just view the world more realistically and no that it is going to take more than just self determination to get the job of good quality. I think Felicia Hall forgot to really reinforce the education concept, because everyone out there in the "Real World" is determined and just because it worked for her does not necessarily mean it will work for everyone else. Now I do understand that she was simply trying to encourage those athletes who never took a moment to reflect on their education and the benefits they can receive from having a college degree. The world is tough sometimes and the paths that we take are not easy strolls. I just wished I could have been touched by her words more.

Crap Cell Phones

I am not of those people that always complains about his cell phone. However, in this last week or so there has been too much complaining from me. I have one of those smart phones and advertisers said it was going to be hassle free. Well apparently they lied to me and all those others with my phone. It has come to the stage where I have just given up on the phone all together and I am not certain of our future together. It was a great run we had together but I believe it time for me to move on and get a less frustrating phone.

St. Jude Marathon

This past weekend, I went downtown to cheer on all the runners of the St. Jude marathon. Most of my friends or people I knew were participating in either the full or half marathon. It is for a really cause and to see all those runners so proud of themselves when they finish the race is a great sight to see. Some of my teammates went and surprised our coach who had no idea we were coming. He was so excited to see us, I have never seen him that happy and that made all of us feel great for the rest of the day. Next year I hope I can also help St. Jude Hospital by also running the half marathon.

Exams

We are near the end of the semester and then exam week will be upon us. This is when everyone at the school spends every waking moment at the library trying to cram last minute. I have to admit that I am also one of these crammers, but not by choice. I do not mind have late night study sessions considering I haven't gone to bed before 3 am in 7 nights. At this point my body would think twice before letting me fall asleep before midnight. I am going to be really excited when I get through this next week.

Family

This was the first time in a long time that my whole family was present on Thanksgiving. Normally I am always absent because I have a tennis tournament during that time and I do not go back now that I am in college because flights are expensive. I have probably been home maybe twice in the last ten years. This was exciting because my brother and I surprised our month and flew her out from California to Nashville. My brother has a house there with his wife and it is not that bad of a drive for me. I could tell my mom was really happy to be around her boys, and I enjoyed getting to spend some time with the family for once. Even though our time together was short, this is a memory I am not willing to forget and truly thankful for.

Food Coma

Food coma is what I refer to as Thanksgiving, the one day of the year where I eat enough to pass out. i make it a goal of mine to be able to eat all the food i want and then take a few steps over to the couch and hibernate. Luckily, I was not in as bad of shape as my brother who was in pain from eating too much food. I thought it was funny, but did not spend the quality time I wanted laughing at him because I entered "Food Coma". I am sure that everyone has experienced this at least once in their lives and many tend to run away from this but I take pleasure in embracing this wonderful day.

The B-Up

This is what everyone has been waiting for, the sequel to the blog about "long distance relationships". "B-Up" means break up, meaning that my girlfriend and I are no longer together. First, you need to know that I could possibly be one of the most care free guys around, whereas my ex-girlfriend is far from it, to put it mildly. The break up happened back on Halloween when I went to Birmingham to participate in a tennis tournament. I was expecting a great weekend because I was able to see my girlfriend and celebrate Halloween with her. Initially, things were alright between us, but as the weekend passed by I noticed that she was acting a bit strange and was not being herself. I tried shrugging it off at first, because I thought she was still stressed from all of her exams that week and I wanted to concentrate on my tournament. FAIL! However, somehow we managed to get through two days of us pretending that things were okay. Finally, on the night of Halloween, I decided that it was time for us to talk about why was she was acting so strange. The thing is, I’m notorious for having terrible timing, especially since she just got into her Halloween costume. Imagine how hard it was for me to be completely serious when I was looking at a pink themed cowgirl with two guns in holsters! It was so hard for me not laugh; every time she walked her spurs would click. Now this was our first real fight and my first real break up, so I had no idea what to expect. If only I could have read a handbook on the art of consoling a crying cowgirl. In the end, we decided that it was better for us to be separate. The tournament that I wanted to do well at ended in a DISASTER. All in all, that could have been the most unique weekend of my life.

Morning Workouts

There are few things in this world that are worse than waking up at the crack of dawn to exercise. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning my team and I have to wake up early to do conditioning and weights. The fall semester is the worse because we do more running in the preseason. However, nothing can explain the feeling I get in my stomach when I wake up in the mornings. Sometimes the feeling in the bottom of my stomach is worse than playing a match. I understand that it is all a part of being a college athlete, but my sleep is the only bit of quality time I have left.

Basketball

I am glad that it is basketball season again. It is my favorite sport to watch besides tennis. Especially since my tigers are back in action, even though I know that the expectations of them doing well this year are low. Tiger basketball is the only sport on campus that brings so many people together under one roof screaming their pride. I was a freshman during their championship run with CDR and Rose on the team. It was an incredible atmosphere on campus and around the city. I had never seen so many tiger fans; it was definitely a defining moment for the city, the school, and the players. This season I hope that we can find that same spark we had two years ago and give all of us tiger blue fans a reason to cheer. GO TIGERS!!!

Elevators

I have a slight frustration when it comes to riding in elevators with other people. The thing that irritates me is how some individuals choose to take the elevator to go up or down one floor. I remember our teacher bringing this up last week and immediately I thought I need to blog on this. It shows that the people who get on the elevator for one floor are extremely lazy. Now, I know how it feels to be lazy, I am just as lazy as the next person, but no one will ever catch me taking the elevator for one floor. Especially, when there are stairs that are clearly visible to the passengers of the elevator. I guess it just bothers me that some people cannot do things as simple as walking up stairs.

Holidays

It is weird to thing that we are fast approaching Thanksgiving, which can be easily considered the second biggest holiday of the year. Many students will seek salvation away from school in the comforts of their families. Even though the holiday is short and is only given a few days off from school. It still means so much to me just being around all those people who I care about and do not get to see that often. We come back from this short break and continue to grind out more work before exams. Then we relax for an extended vacation to celebrate the biggest holiday of Christmas.

Memphis Football

Well a big story this week has to do with the Head Football coach, Tommy West getting fired. It is tough to say if this was the best decision or not, because I do not think that West is entirely to blame. I will have admit that we have one of the worse athletic administrations in all of college. R.C. Johnson has not done a single thing that has benefited our athletics since hiring John Calapari. However, he continued to fly under the radar hiding behind the success of the basketball team. Well his time is about up, no hall of fame basketball coach and a crap football team. I guess we will have to wait for another firing coming in the future.

American Politics

I want to talk about American politics, because it has to do with my major of Political Science. Normally, I choose to not get into heated debates about what is right and what is wrong. However, recently I was asked to write a paper on the three things I felt were the most important in establishing a better country. The three things I listed were illegal immigration, unemployment, and the national deficit. I think those issues are critical because they affect the citizens the most during this time of depression. It is time for us to find adequate solutions for our problems and we need to start with these.

Halloween

This Saturday begins another American tradition, where kids dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for candy. I never realized how excited people about this time, people start decorating there house at the beginning of October. Most people would say that this is there favorite time of the year, especially foreigners who do not celebrate Halloween in there native countries. I am real excited because it is never to old to dress up for Halloween. When means I only have a couple days left to get a good costume this year, because I had the biggest choke of all time last year. German Soccer Player, I was an idiot!

Good people are out there

After reading O'Conner's story, "A Good man is hard to find", I realized that do not believe that is true. I know so many good people out there, that I would not be able to count them all. I understand where she is coming from, and I am not naive because there are bad people out there. However, I do not go out of my way to seek those type of people. I believe in each and every person until they do something wrong and then you can choose to forgive them and move on. I am not taking anything away from the story, because it was a good short story.

Double Duece

Recently I learned that the bar "Double Duece" was shut down because of underage drinking. I thought this was funny because I'm not sure I know anyone of age that goes there to drink. It is there to be that safe haven for those who are not quite of age on Thursday nights and go there because they allow 18 and over. I understand that it is the law and illegal consumption of alcohol can not be tolerated. However, the good news is that the bar will reopen in the coming weeks. They will probably enforce more rules, and have more security monitoring everyone's actions, but at the end of the day double duece will remain the same.

Injuries

Basically I have been injured for the last six years of my life, and no one knows how to treat it. I recently received my second MRI in two years, and told completely different things on them both. The first one said that I have a stress fracture on the bone under my bicep, but my second MRI stated that my arm was normal. Which would have been great news except I'm still in pain and have no solution. Now, I have been put on the disabled list because they need to run more test on me, because they also have no idea what is wrong. The worst part is I have to watch my teammates practice everyday and it is so hard to watch others play the sport you love. If I end with a recap then it would read, six years of pain, ten doctors, and zero help.

My Fall Break

I decided to visit my girlfriend, who goes to school about three hours away during my break. Normally, with practice and tournaments I rarely have a weekend off to go see her. Most of the time she comes to see but she is also a tennis player for her school, so her schedule is just as confusing as mine. However, I decided that this weekend was going to be dedicated to making that trip down to UAB. This was the first time I actually spent time in the city without getting ready for a competition or just driving through. I have to admit that it was a nice city and had some similarities to Memphis. This was also the first time that I met all of my girlfriend's teammates, which is always interesting when one person goes to meet a group of girls with judging eyes,ha. The good thing was that they appreciated my personality making everything comfortable between us.

The Glass Menagerie

I decided to do the creative option for the rough drafts. I had no idea how it was going to turn out because I have not spent much time around plays. And, for me to portray a character in a play was another level for me. My group consisted of athletes, who I know some and feel a little comfortable around because if I'm going to make a fool of myself then I might as well do around people I like. One I got rid of the last butterflies floating around in my stomach. I felt a relief while shooting the video and I really tried to get into my character,"JIm". I thought we all did a good job, obviously we wanted to approach a more comical atmosphere. I have to give credit and thank my group for all of their contributions.

weather

I know this can seem, like a B.S. blog post, however I think I can make this somewhat interesting since I am very frustrated with the weather. I find it very hard to believe that it can rain this much in the fall. Most people would not believe me if I told them that I witnessed 14 straight days of rain. I left the city twice during that fortnight, and it felt that the rain was personally following me. Mother Nature might have a grudge against me at the moment, because I'm losing it dealing with all the rain at the moment. I just can't take it anymore, can I please have one week of sunshine please.

Legislation

I am a Political Science major, which means much of my schooling has to deal with politics. Ultimately, I want to go to Law School and start a career as a lawyer. I currently hold a position on "S.A.A.C.", which stands for Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Basically we talk about on how we can provide for the athletes of our school and the conference better. A few days ago we had to go over what seemed like a bible size packet dealing with legislation for all the different sports. It could have been the longest two hours of my life, because we go over new rules each year and whatever we vote on never returns in our favor. Now it has become a pointless waste of time for the coaches and athletes. Hopefully my future in politics will not be as pointless.

Street Car Named Desire

I recently went to the Hatiloo theater were I watched a performance for the play "A Street Car named Desire". It was interesting to say the least, I thought the concept of how they viewed the play and the path they chose to perform it was good. However, at times I felt untouched by the actors as if what they were saying was not quite reaching me. It seemed that I was not apart of the audience that they were trying to reach, which is fine because they had a full house with few people around my age. I just could not get rid of the feeling that there should be some deep connection with myself and the actors on stage. After it was all said and done, I basically left the play disappointed. It had nothing to do with the acting, but more with who they were directing there passion to if that makes any sense.

The City.

The other night i was watching television and flipping through the channels when I came across the mayoral debate. I decided to tune in and watch and see what each candidate has to offer for the city. When I continued to watch, I noticed that the candidates went away for talking about the real issues and spent more time talking about the bad things about each other. That is what I think politics have come to, they are all about who can dirty up the other persons image. Which I think is the worse because they forget to think how we feel, and what we want for the city. The people should not vote for the person with the cleanest record. They should believe in the person that can get the most done.

Compliance

In athletic sports, athletes have to deal with the compliance department that determines the wrongs and rights for athletes. However, at this university they only tell us about the wrongs that we are doing. They make it hard to hard to be an athlete in school and one trying to enter the school. I do not think it is like this at every university, but it is crap here. Everyday, they tell my sport another thing that we cannot do because their scared of the NCAA after all the Basketball problems. Well, guess what we are not the basketball team and we should not be punished because of their mistakes. They should treat every sport differently in order to better provide for each individual sport.

Student-athletes

At the University of Memphis, we are big on sports and have many athletes. Now some sports provide revenue for the university, those being basketball and football. There are 16 other sports that do not provide any revenue for the school, so their expenses are split from the school budget. Woman's sports receive more benefit because of Title IX, and the male sports struggle to barely break-even. What I'm trying to get at is why are those sports that bring back so much for the university are not compensated in some way. I think they should be congratulated for doing so much for the campus and they should stand above the rest.

Television

It's crazier to think how far the media has come since the invention of the television. How celebrities are able to control the masses just by announcing which brand of shoe they like to wear the best. This has become more common with the surge of reality shows. One example, would be "The Hills" starring a rich from the valley that is suppose to be pursuing a job in fashion. I think that it is great that she has her own show and she is trying to make a name for herself in the fashion world. However, she should not respected as a role , because I'm pretty sure she never had to work hard to get where she is and in fact everything was handed to her. This show is so highly regarded and young s want to forget their education and try to be just like her. Well good luck, because the chances of that actually happening are slim to none.

Tiger Athlettics

I want to take some time and talk about all the different sports at the University of Memphis. Most students probably have no idea that this college offers sports like rifle or even tennis, and i consider tennis to be a household sport. I guess if you are not football, baseball, or basketball then no one cares about you sport does at the end of the season. Which is very frustrating because when you go to other university in the SEC and witness some many fans supporting the little sports of the campus, well that helps the confidence of that sport. Currently our woman's soccer team is one of the best in the nation and there fan totals have steadily increase. However, that's from other athletes, family and friends. I know that every fan at the FedEx Forum is not a cousin or a best-friend to any of those players, yet they still show their full support. Why can we not do that for every sport, it is time for a change.

Study Questions

The country reached equality due to the changing of certain Amendments in the constitution. American democracy and capitalism are not dead nor has soviet-style totalitarianism succeed in taking over. I believe it creates a fresh start for a lot of people, allowing them to reach new levels, heights they always assume to be unreachable, yet they continue to be treated as controlled beings.

There shouldn’t be a system in the world that can allow for the sort of tyranny that is displayed in the story. A just system would not cause such factors either. It seems that Vonnegut is trying to demonstrate that humans can be organized by media attention. I think a major part of this would be greed, because everyone wants power, which leads to envy and doing whatever it takes to accomplish their goals. Queenie and the other girls did what was normal for them, because they were program to see things that way, so if you believe that you should have complete control over others, and then it can become an attainable goal. That individual’s believe what everyone those in power say is true. Well im not sure about Rosie O’Donnell, but I know that Oprah’s popularity is incomparable. There are some many people in this country that worship Oprah’s every word, from which books to read and buy each month to which is a better color. Black or grey? It’s scary to think that just from being a household name that you can hold so much influence over people’s decisions. I think that they are role models, because they are so confident in themselves, that it actually attracts others. That has to be the only way to explain it because you cannot explain why a person of Rosie O’Donnell’s stature would be able to have influence. There is no way that she has gone threw a life changing experience, and even if she did, what makes her different from the everyday American. Everything is derived around marketing and if a Barbie doll looks more like a human, then little girls are going to want to look more like that doll which they idolize. Obviously we all go through trends or “fads” during out schooling and it is mostly due to peer pressure. If certain kids resemble what is shown on television then that most be the thing to do or wear. I honestly think that practices that include everyone regardless of skill level are good to a certain point. It is good at establishing the feeling of belonging. If you single the weak out, then they walk around believing they are weak.

The agents are there to make sure that everyone abides by the rules that are set in place, which means anyone out of line needs to be punished. One process would be if someone was given power and they were to misuse that power and become a tyrant.

I would like to think that the author was parodying the part of “freedom of speech”. Those handicaps take away from people being able to think for themselves. Well, allowing for all individuals to have one voice represents a lot about equality.

Any sort of reform is going to produce tension among the citizens, if people do not like where they are being placed, then they speak out, which leads to a movement. Basically the government in this story is forcing equality among the citizens, well that can either work two ways, one way being the story and the other being f Harrison Bergeron influenced more people.

That it is alright to be normal and you do not have to be super to be in control over any matters.

George is described as being quite intelligent and having an understanding on situations and can develop an accurate opinion on matters. However, Hazel is shown as having a barely normal brain pattern and seen being slightly clueless, to the point that she envies the transmitter in George’s ear. They live the typical life of a husband and wife that sit together and watch television after a long day of work. I believe he’s getting at the everyday family. When you watch or see so many things during the day, you’re bound to hear an assortment of sounds, and that’s kind of how it is in George’s ear. He goes from hearing a glass break to a car accident.

Harrison is a threat to society because he is a genius, at the age of fourteen. He was forced to wear ear-phones so the noise amplified in his ear, wore glasses to mess up his vision, had black caps on his teeth so that he would seem uglier, and he had weight forced on him.

I think he was going to the main source of where people got all there information, the most watched program on television. I think he was trying to show people that he was not the villain but instead one of them, just someone that had seen past the lies of the government.

His actions are similar to Sammy’s, however, greater because he is trying to urge an entire nation to rise up and think for themselves opposed to doing the right thing to protect the pride of a few girls. The young are able to continue to dream and use their imagination and do not believe they should be locked up physically and mentally. It translates to a country going down.

Harrison is telling them that he will make more established than they are now, as long as they stand up and perform now, and turn away from what is scripted for them. That everyone is beautiful in a way and they shouldn’t have to cover that up from others.

When there is a rebellion the best way to silence it is to get rid of the leader and that is what the handicapper general did, she ended Harrison’s rebellion. Her name shows that she is the person that makes everyone else worse in an effort to make she seem better.
She is similar because when there is a problem and people are going against you own beliefs, then those things must never be tolerated.

I think she forgot what she was crying about because there was no one to tell her and she got distracted by surrounding matters.

Poems

In the poem "rites of passage" I tried to determine if their were any similarties from this and "A&P". The only thing that i could take from was how the author took time to fully describe each character in extreme detail, that it similar to what John Updike did in his story. In "The One Girl at the Boys' Party" it was kind of the opposite of Sammy's role in "A&P", she was the one girl singled out by the presence of only males. The author showed how she used math as a tool of constant calculation to determine everything around her. Then the follow of detail, once everyone exited the pool, was similar to how Sammy looked at Queenie and the others.

Perception

After watching the John Updike interview, I was able to perceive a few things differently. I never really understood the significance of Queenie's role other than she was the leader of the group and Sammy's interest. However, when Updike gave reasoning behind the items she purchased i was able to get a accurate assessment on her background as well. I alluded to the fact that Queenie was out of Sammy's league, but a person does not have to be from a great upbringing to be out of someone's reach. I also noticed after going back over everything that Sammy had the sense of trying to break away from the pack, and not being what is expected. Sammy wanted to stand tall for something in his life, therefore portrayed as their champion. It was great to how John Updike give his of the book, because it makes it much easier to see the story through his eyes.

Hero

The dictionary defines a hero as a person that is distinguished in courage and ability. A person that displays traits that is honorable. Many believe a hero to be someone that has done something incredible for another. Whether it is saving a person’s life or standing up for a truly just cause. I came past a story about a pilot from Indonesia named, Budi Soehardi, who founded a children’s home in one of the poorest places in Indonsia. His mission was to provide for children in need that had lost everything due to the recent civil war. He thought about the horrible conflict that many innocent refugees were in. He initially was scheduled to go on vacation from his airline duties but decided to do something of importance with his life. Soehardi took his wife and his family to Timor where he built an orphanage that started with four children and now has risen to providing 47 kids with education, food, and shelter. He was able to get donations from his friends and local business from other countries. This one man has been able to change the lives of a number of individuals of different ages, ranging from toddlers to college students. This is considered a self less act that demonstrates a true hero of courage and honor. Soehardi did not need a special power or have to wear a cape, but he needed determination and strong character. When compared to the main character from “A&P”, Sammy does not seem like much of a hero. A hero does not perform acts so that he can be noticed. The first time I read the story I believed Sammy to be a hero, because he stood up for other people and tried to protect their dignity. However, after Sammy stood up to his boss and made his decision towards quitting. He went to find the girl hoping they had witnessed his “heroic” act, but they did not and left. He then looks back into the window of the store and ponders on the mistake he has made. A true hero should not have any doubts on decisions of the past because; decisions are not made based on social status. It seems that Sammy cared more about impressing a few girls then actually standing for what is right. Therefore, reading the definition and hearing stories of individual that change the lives of others, it is hard to compare Sammy to hero “status”. Budi Soehardi did not care what his family would think about him wanting to take time away from his job to go to another country and helping refugees. In fact, his family showed their complete support and offered equal assistance. He knew that it would not be an easy task of simply getting food donated or providing shelter in a war torn country, but he did not care. This thought process is what makes heroes special, they do not care about the obstacles in their way, and they push them aside and continue to strive forward. He is truly my definition of a hero.
